Know Peace

Not a short time away from the noise and the clamor, not a quiet moment here or there, but lasting peace in your soul. Peace, despite your circumstances. Peace, no matter the problems. Peace, regardless of the difficulties. A kind of peace that, as the Bible says, goes far beyond even our ability to understand it!

Peace, true and lasting peace, can only come from a relationship with God. Haven't you tried everything else? If someone out there had another answer, wouldn't everyone know it by now? If one of those self-help books actually worked, why would bookstores have aisle upon aisle of them?

Regardless of your current beliefs, you will appreciate the never pushy, straight-forward, academic, and historical presentation of what the Bible claims. And regardless of your eventual decision, you will be glad when you know more. Is this really God's Word? If so, what does it really say? What story is the Creator telling us?

In microeconimics, as well as in life, they call it "Opportunity Cost." A choice between two mutually exclusive alternatives costs the value of the choice not taken. Here, you have an opportunity to privately ask some questions you may have been unwilling to ask. You can get answers about spiritual matters, life, death, and most of all, eternity.

Inspiration of Scripture

The belief that the Bible is divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit directly to holy men of God. It is preserved to us even today without containing error (inerrant) and without teaching error (infallible). 2 Peter 1:21 says, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness[...]"

A ministry for women to gather, study Scripture, and encourage one another.

Livestream

Broadcasting services online primarily for members who are ill or providentially hindered from attending in person. As an added benefit, the recordings may be reviewed later.

Local Church Autonomy

The biblical position that every New Testament church must govern itself independently under Christ and should not, therefore, enter into any fellowship, denomination, or hierarchy that impinges upon that direct relationship.

Men's Prayer

A time for men to meet for prayer, fellowship, and spiritual encouragement.

New Creature

The results of Salvation produces a living (or quickened) spirit in a man. The Holy Spirit of God indwells the man and communes with the quickened spirit of man in such a way that the desires of the person change. This new creature (spiritual) will war with the old nature (fleshly or natural man). The battlefield of this war will be in the mind and heart (soul). Galatians 5:17 says, "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would." See also Sanctification, Obedience.

Nursery Ministry

Qualified and authorized care provided for infants and toddlers during services.

Obedience

Obedience to the Law of God cannot earn Salvation, but once Saved the believer should desire to obey Him in every Bible commandment that applies to the New Testament believer. Jesus said in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." The New Creature that results from Salvation should create this desire for Sanctification. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Offering

A freewill financial gift, over and above one's tithe, given through the church of one's membership and used to support a missionary, ministry, or particular need.

Offenses

Any type of stumbling block cast into the believer's path. As Luke 17:1 says, "Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!" The believer does not have to fall at the stumbling block and sin. In fact, the Bible says in Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Therefore, believers should navigate around the sinful offense placed in the way. For this reason, we must not become "offended" or as one who is "tripped up" sinfully. As the Bible says in Psalm 119:165, "Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them."

Pastor

A spiritual leader and teacher specifically called of God and confirmed by one of the Lord's churches to fulfill the parallel roles of Shepherd, Elder, and Bishop for that single local and visible church. The Bible defines this office by twenty-two unique requirements listed in 1 Timothy Chapter 3 and Titus Chapter 1.

Preaching

The proclamation of God’s Word, typically by the pastor during church services. Preaching declares the Bible such that the Holy Spirit of God may prompt a decision within each hearer. This differentiates preaching from teaching, as the latter provides information only and requires no decision or response. Preaching is an encouragement to the believer. God uses preaching convicts the sinful to repent. 2 Timothy 4:2 says, "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

Pre-Tribulation

The Bible-based position that the Saved will be taken to Heaven (or "raptured," i.e., caught up) before the Great Tribulation period described primarily in the Book of the Revelation. The Rapture will apply to two distinct groups: The living Saved and the dead Saved. The Bible often calls Saved persons who have passed away as those "asleep in Christ." Both groups will be caught up together, but the dead will rise first. The living Saved will join them in the cloud. Both will be quickly changed into a glorified body that no longer suffers the presence of sin in the flesh or the possibility of death.

Pre-Millenial

The Bible-based position that the Book of Revelation and other descriptions of "last things" (Eschatology) have not yet occurred. In other words, all of the rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans have not yet suddenly turned into literal blood, nor has 25% of the entire population of the Earth died in the Seal judgements followed by 33% of the entire population of the Earth died suddenly in the Bowl judgements. These events did not happen in the year AD 70, as some claim, since John wrote them as future events in the year AD 95 or 96.

Pre-Wrath

The Bible-based position that the Lord will rapture (or catch away) all of His children before the beginning of the Tribulation Period. 1 Thessalonians 5:9 says, "For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,"

Post-Tribulation

The mistaken idea that all of the future prophetic events described in the Bible have already occurred. This view does not account for the plain-sense reading of Scripture and creates many impossible contradictions that no one can reconcile. It is a false teaching. Jesus said in Mark 13:21, "And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:"

Propitiation

Christ’s sacrifice (or payment) that satisfies the debt against God created by each person's sin. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Questions

God provides every living soul with a reasoning mind and free will. He invites investigation and legitimate questions. Isaiah 1:18 says, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." Psalm 34:8 says, "O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him." And Hebrews 11:6 says, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

Quicken

To be made alive or resurrected. The Bible uses this word to describe Jesus Christ in His Work on the Cross, as 1 Corinthians 15:45 says, "And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." Salvation produces a living spirit in the believer, as described in Ephesians 2:1, "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;"

Redemption

The act of being bought back from sin through Christ’s blood.

Regeneration

The spiritual transformation that occurs at salvation.

Repentence

A change of mind regarding one's own sin. An essential agreement with what God says in His Word about the sinful state of the individual, such as Romans 3:23, which says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God[...]" This precludes any attempt to work for salvation, as it is a debt already incurred, therefore the individual comes to realize that they cannot bring anything of themselves worthy to propitiate that debt. As Isaiah 64:6 states, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."

Revelation

God’s disclosure of Himself through Scripture is known as "special" revelation. God's disclosure of Himself through creation is called "general" revelation.

Salvation

Deliverance from the power and penalty of sin through faith alone placed upon the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sanctification

The process of becoming more Christlike through spiritual growth.

Soteriology

The study of Salvation and its doctrines, as detailed within the Holy Bible.

Soulwinning

Evangelism focused on leading individuals to personal faith in Christ.

Substitutionary Atonement

The doctrine that Christ died, once for all, in place of sinners.

Tithe

Financial gifts given to in obedience to Scripture to support the church of your membership. The tithe (meaning tenth) should be ten percent of one's gross income.

Transcendence

God’s existence above, and independence from, the material, natural, and visible universe.

Trinity

The biblical teaching that the one God of the Bible relates to His Creation in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Trinity does not imply God is three gods, nor is any one member of the Godhead only one third God. All persons of the Godhead are all God all at the same time. They coexist, they are co-eternal, and they are co-equal. These persons relate much like a single man can be at one time a son, a husband, and father and yet still be one man. Another metaphor may be the substance water, that can coexist as solid, liquid, and vapor. While the Trinity cannot be fully understood by a finite mind, it may be helpful (but certainly not comprehensively adequate) to think in general terms of God the Father as relating at a "universal" level, God the Son relating at a "church" level, and God the Holy Spirit relating at a "personal" or individual level.

Undershepherd

This term may be applied to a pastor in reference to Jesus Christ being the Chief Shepherd, as described in 1 Peter 5:4, "And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." This should not be viewed as providing the pastor some special privilege to sin or "lord over" the flock. This term does not appear in the text of the Bible. See also: Pastor.

Victory

The Bible describes sin, death, the grave, and Satan as conquered foes beneath the heal of Jesus Christ. Genesis 3:15 describes it as the crushed head of a snake beneath the heal of the Messiah, "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." He has overcome the world. Jesus declared this in John 16:33, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." Because He already won the victory, all who are Saved share in it. As Romans 8:37 puts it, "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."

Walk

The lifestyle and conversation of the believer in Christ, the manner in which they follow Him, and how they grow (or fail to grow) in closeness with their Savior and His Word.

Wine

In the Old Testament, there were several explicit words that differentiate alcoholic wine from fresh, new, or non-fermented juice. In the New Testament, only one Greek word is used and refers to both. The word "oinos" is not always fermented. This argument cannot be had with the various and obvious Hebrew words. Because of this, some incorrectly teach without context that Jesus turned water into fermented wine or that fermented wine may be used in the Lord's Supper.

Certainly, alcoholic wine existed. Juice also existed, however, sometimes stored in earthen vessels and sealed with wax underground or in cisterns to prevent fermentation, called morning wine. Several Roman sources document this practice. This difference led to the comments about being drunk early in the morning in Acts 2, as that sealing might occasionally fail and the juice would turn. They were ridiculing the disciples. Only a buffoon or a habitual drunk would use “I didn’t know my morning wine had fermented” as an excuse.

Logically: Fermented wine CANNOT picture the sinless blood of Christ for the same reason leavened bread cannot. Fermentation is corruption, and works similarly to yeast. Therefore, if the Last Supper could not use fermented wine as a symbol of the uncorrupted Blood of Jesus, then we know that they used juice at other times than only breakfast. If so, we may then further infer that they may also serve juice at wedding suppers.

Wrest

To misuse or misconstrue the Word of God, often for personal gain, to forcibly pull verses and meanings away from their context, audience, and applications. 2 Peter 3:16 says, "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."

X Rated

Illicit and sinful sexual material, unsuitable for all Christians. For men, often visual in nature, such as pornographic images or video. For women, this may take the form of emotional infidelity or through novels and certain "romantic" films.

Yokefellow

Those who help with ministry, both men and women. Philippians 4:3 says, "And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life."

Zeal

A willing dedication and single-hearted devotion to God.

Zion

A physical location in Israel (Zion's Hill) but also often used symbolically to refer to Heaven or the dwelling place of God.
